How to Wash a 100% Cotton T-Shirt and Keep Its Shape

A useful care routine starts with the label on the garment. Cotton T-shirts can differ in knit, dye and finishing, so no single temperature or wash setting suits every tee. The steps below are general habits for looking after a 100% cotton T-shirt.

Read the label before the first wash

Check the recommended water temperature, drying method and any warning about bleach or ironing. If a printed or decorated tee has special instructions, those take priority. Do not rely on a generic online rule when the garment label says something different.

Separate colours and check pockets

Wash light and dark garments separately, especially for the first few washes when colour transfer is a concern. Empty pockets and close rough fasteners on other items so they do not catch the T-shirt fabric.

Use a gentle cycle when suitable

Choose a wash cycle appropriate for the care label and the level of dirt. Avoid overloading the machine; the tee needs room to move and rinse. Use the detergent amount recommended on its packaging, because extra detergent is not always easier to rinse away.
