What Does GSM Mean for a T-Shirt?

October 15, 2026

When comparing T-shirts online, you may see a number followed by “GSM.” It can be useful, but it is not a quality score. Understanding what the number measures helps you ask better questions before buying.

GSM measures fabric weight

GSM means grams per square metre. It describes the weight of a square metre of fabric, not the weight of one finished T-shirt. A higher number generally means more fabric mass per area, but it does not tell you how the garment has been cut or sewn.

Does a higher GSM mean a better T-shirt?

No single GSM is best for every person or season. A heavier fabric can feel more substantial; a lighter one can feel less bulky. Yarn, knit structure and finishing also affect hand feel and durability. Compare the complete garment rather than choosing solely by a number.

Think about where you will wear it

If you wear tees under jackets, a lighter-feeling fabric may be easier to layer. If you prefer a more structured drape, you may look at heavier fabrics. In Jaipur’s warm months, consider your own comfort, the fit and the rest of the outfit; fabric weight alone will not predict how cool you will feel.

What if a product does not list GSM?

Do not guess. Look at the stated fibre content, garment measurements, clear product photographs and care information. If weight is essential to your decision, ask the seller for the specification before ordering.
